With key stage three students, the tutors we introduce use lots of physical resources to explain mathematics. The act of “doing”, without the constraints of having to do lots of writing, helps students focus and take on key concepts more easily.
Once the concept has been learnt, the tutor will move more towards the formal written stage, and look at the processes students should use to get their maths on paper. The tutors we introduce also teach a lot of concepts using “bar modelling”, a concept developed in Singapore which has been adopted by many secondary schools in the UK, due to its visual appeal for students who struggle with written methods.
Tutors understand that their students at this age learn best when they are having fun, so they will always try and build in a game element to our sessions wherever they can.
